Cosplay, Cameras & Nostalgia: My Photography Adventures at Liverpool Comic Con 2025
Earlier this year, I had the absolute pleasure of attending Liverpool Comic Con 2025—and what a weekend it was! As a photographer and lover of all things pop culture, it was a dream to be surrounded by incredible cosplayers, legendary characters, and the buzzing energy that only a comic con can bring.
From the moment I stepped inside the venue, I was immersed in a colourful world where fiction meets reality. Cosplayers brought to life some of the most iconic characters from classic movies like Aliens, Star Wars, The Karate Kid, and Starship Troopers. I found myself constantly torn between fangirling and snapping away with my camera!
Capturing the Magic of Cosplay
Photographing cosplay is like storytelling in a single frame. Every costume tells a story—not just about the character, but about the passion and creativity of the person wearing it. My approach is always to make the cosplayer feel like the hero they’re portraying, whether it’s a detailed Xenomorph build from Aliens or a perfectly styled Cobra Kai uniform.
Here are a few things I focus on during comic con photoshoots:
- Lighting & contrast: Cons often have tricky indoor lighting, but finding pockets of natural light or using portable lighting can make characters pop.
- Character emotion: I love encouraging cosplayers to step into character—those subtle gestures or battle stances can really make the shot feel cinematic.
- Details matter: From hand-painted armour to vintage robes, I make sure to highlight the effort that went into every costume.
A Nostalgic Line-up of Legends
The beauty of Liverpool Comic Con this year was the strong throwback vibe. Whether it was groups of Star Wars rebels and stormtroopers marching together, a Karate Kid showdown between Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai, or a lone Starship Troopers trooper holding the line, there was such a nostalgic charm to it all.
I even caught a group recreating scenes from Aliens—complete with motion trackers and pulse rifles. As a photographer, these moments are gold. You’re not just capturing a photo; you're freezing a piece of pop culture history.
Why I Love Comic Con Photography
There’s something so joyful and inclusive about comic cons. Everyone is there to celebrate their fandoms, connect with likeminded people, and have fun. As a photographer, it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to give people beautiful portraits of themselves as their favourite characters—something they’ve often spent weeks or months preparing for.
Comic con photography allows me to combine my love for portraiture with a bit of action, drama, and imagination.
